This paper will introduce selected practical issues and contemporary theoretical perspectives in postgraduate supervision, with a focus on participants’ own experience. The paper aims to extend participants’ knowledge of both the research and practical perspectives on the epistemology of postgraduate student supervision. Discussion topics will include models of supervision, different models of the thesis, developing students' research writing, issues in the supervision of international students, culturally appropriate models of supervision, social and psychological aspects of supervision, and transferable skills beyond the postgraduate degree.

This paper is a 15-point elective in the PGCert Tertiary Teaching and Learning. It requires 150 hours of study and will be taught in blended mode. Included will be face-to-face meetings (timing to be arranged with participants in the first class), online (Moodle) discussion and interactions, independent study, assessment preparation, and practice-based tasks. All readings and paper resources will be accessible in Moodle. The paper is pass/fail.

    1. Understand the changing nature of the doctoral degree and implications for practice;
